New Mail Order Regulation: an overview of the most important changes for Swiss consumers

Whether from the sofa, commuting on the train or during lunch breaks, more and more people in Switzerland are buying goods online from around the world and having them delivered conveniently to their home. The new “Federal Tax Administration (FTA) Mail Order Regulation” for international consignments came into force on 1 January 2019 – and has resulted in lots of questions for Swiss Post.

We have summarized the most important points in a short video. Important note: Swiss Post is implementing the legal provisions. The Federal Tax Administration is responsible for overseeing this.
As a result of the new Mail Order Regulation, Swiss consumers will now have to pay VAT every time they buy goods from foreign mail order companies which are liable for tax. The customs clearance fees remain unchanged and are still only payable for goods with a value (including transport costs) from CHF 65 or CHF 200.
